Wissett Wines was conceived during Jonathan’s (first!) mid-life crisis in the mid-eighties, when we searched out Valley Farm for the express purpose of establishing a vineyard. The first vines were brought from Alsace, France and planted in the spring of 1987.
The vineyard was enlarged some five years later so that there are now 8 acres of vines with the potential of yielding 10,000 bottles or more of fine English Wine each year – weather-permitting of course!
The vines are all grafted on to disease-resistant root-stock suitable for our soils and climate. They are planted at 1.8m (6ft) to 2.4m (8ft) centres in rows set 3.6m (12ft) apart, for ease of machinery access. The vines in the old “clos” vineyard behind the barn are trained on wires at eye-level, a system known as Geneva Double Curtain, named after the wine-growing district in the Finger Lakes region of upper New York State, USA, while those in the newer, bigger vineyards are trained according to the Scott-Henry system that is adopted extensively in New Zealand.
The main varieties grown here are Pinot Gris, Madeleine Angevine and Auxerrois with smaller plantings of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
We produce regional, quality still and quality sparkling wines, which are dry to medium-dry, and we recommend that you serve them slightly chilled – they are delicious on their own as an aperitif, and complement perfectly summer salads, fish and sea-food dishes.
Wissett Bubbly is made from a blend of several of the varieties grown on the estate and is produced in the classical manner i.e. after a second fermentation in the bottle. While it will continue to improve with bottle-age, it is ready to be enjoyed right now!
A word about our logo: it depicts Noah tending his vines and is taken from the design of one of the main roof bosses in Norwich Cathedral, with kind permission of the Dean & Chapter. If you visit the cathedral, be sure to look out for him; you’ll find him just above the organ loft.
The vineyard is open daily from 11am to 6pm for tours, tastings and sales, but it's always best to 'phone ahead so we can be prepared for your visit! We are closed for January and February.
